Leslie Heward, who is the permanent conductor of the City of Birmingham Orchestra, is unquestionably one of Britain's finest conductors. Like Sir Henry Wood , Heward is very catholic in his tastes and he is therefore as happy with the music of modern composers, particularly British, as he is with the classics. It was Heward who gave the first performance of Moeran's Symphony at a concert of the Royal Philharmonic Society in January 1938.
