Violin Concerto in B minor
Elgar Elgar 's Violin Concerto was given its first performance by Kreisler at a concert of the Royal Philharmonic Society in 1910. H. C. Colles points out that it ' is remarkable as the first work of the kind by an English composer which can be said to have taken root in the repertory of violin virtuosi. No doubt Elgar's early training as a violinist stood him in good stead in tackling the technical problems of writing, for the solo instrument, and the bravura passages are as successful as they are daring. But more personal qualities make the work live in the affections of listeners.' Sir Donald Tovey has described it. as 'one of the most intimate works of this century. -

Few ballads have more poignancy than the tale of cruel Barbara Allen. Barbara, as those familiar with the ballad know, although destined to marry Jemmy, the squire's son, fell in love with a wayfaring lord and treated her faithful admirer more than cruelly. It is a Ballad of unrequited love, of a youth who really died of it and of his chastened beloved who decided to do likewise.
Joyce Redman is one of the most brilliant of the younger actresses of today. She recently played with Robert Donat in The Devil's Disciple, and previously made a name for herself in the title role in Lady Precious Stream at the Kingsway Theatre, London, in December 1939

French suite, No. 5, in G played on the harpsichord by John Ticehurst
The ' French ' Suites for the clavier are a set of six which Bach wrote about 1720-1722 for his second wife, Anna Magdalena. It was not Bach's idea to call the suites ' French '. This was a nickname, probably bestowed by the family, to distinguish them for their lightness, which has always been a characteristic of French music.
