Stanley Tudor was born in Stoke-on-Trent twenty-nine years ago, and started his career at the age of fourteen as pianist at the Capitol, Hanley. His signature tune, ' Singing in the rain ', is dedicated to the three weeks' downpour which greeted his arrival in Manchester for the opening of the Gaumont Theatre in October 1935.

Theresa la Cava has collected a unique library from all parts of the Continent, and has made a speciality of collecting rare songs. She is particularly interested in Spanish music, and claims to have got the last bundle of songs out of Madrid before the outbreak of the Spanish Civil War. This morning she is giving first performances of some songs by the celebrated modern Spanish composer, Joaquin Turina.

The story of The Fire-Bird is based upon a Russian legend. The Fire-Bird flies through a glade in the forest. Prince Ivan pursues it to the gates of the enchanted castle of Kashchez, the magician and fiend. There he captures the Fire-Bird, who offers him a single golden feather, a magic protection in all times of danger.
In the castle gardens are thirteen princesses, captives of Kashchez. Ivan falls in love with one of them and they all dance until dawn. He tries to follow them into the castle but he is seized by the guards. Ivan summons the Fire-Bird, who draws all the inhabitants into a frantic dance, and when they sink exhausted to the ground lulls them to sleep. Ivan then gets hold of the magic egg in which the life of Kashchez is contained, smashes it, and the monster dies. All the captives are released and join in a joyous dance.
