The Rt. Hon. D. Lloyd George, O.M., M.P.
Tonight, at a time of crisis, the Right Hon. David Lloyd George, who, as Prime Minister and First Lord of the Treasury in 1916, steered this country through a crisis, is to give his reminiscences of that time.
Just as he is the Father of the House of Commons (he has represented Caernarvon for nearly fifty years), so he is its most colourful personality. Born in Manchester, educated in Wales, solicitor in 1884, M.P. in 1890, he was President of the Board of Trade in 1905. From 1908 to 1915 he was Chancellor of the Exchequer; in 1915 he became Minister of Munitions, and in 1916 successively Secretary of State for War and Prime Minister.
He will always be remembered for his drive for munitions at a time when they were short, and for his genius in calling in experts to handle experts' jobs. At the time, it was said that he was the greatest wartime Prime Minister since the younger Pitt. Nothing can be more interesting today than to hear something of the critical period of the Great War when Lloyd George took the wheel so ably.
