(Autumn, 1939). Fifth concert of the series, Part 2
from Colston Hall, Bristol
Solo pianoforte, Moiseiwitsch
The BBC Symphony Orchestra, leader, Paul Beard, conducted by Clarence Raybould

God Save the King

8.4 Moiseiwitsch and Orchestra
Rhapsody on a theme of Paganini, for pianoforte and orchestra - Rachmaninoff

8.27 Orchestra
Variations on an Original Theme (Enigma, Op. 36) - Elgar
Theme (Enigma): Andante. Variations: 1 (C.AE.) L'istesso tempo.
2 (M.D.S.P.) Allegro. 3 (R.T.B.) Alegretto 4 (W.M.B.) Allegro di molto. 5 (R.P.A.) Moderato. 6 (Ysobel) Andantino. 7 (Troyte) Presto. 8 (W.N.) Allegretto. 9 (Nimrod) Adagio. 10 (Dorabella) Intermezzo. 11 (G.R.S.) Allegro di molto. 12 (B.G.N.) Andante. 13 (---) Romanza: Moderato. 14 (E.D.U.) Finale: Allegro

Elgar's Variations on an original theme are dedicated 'To my friends
pictured within,' and consequently each variation is prefaced with the initial or nickname of the friend 'pictured'. Referring to this novel idea, Elgar says: 'It is true that I sketched for their amusement and •mine the idiosyncrasies of fourteen of my
friends, not necessarily musicians, but this is a personal matter, and need not have been mentioned publicly; the Variations should stand simply as a piece of music'

However, as one of Elgar's admirers once pointed out, 'We see these friends of his in the light in which they appeared to Elgar... But, as you cannot make a portrait of anybody without also making a portrait of yourself for the eyes that can see it, the real hero is Elgar himself.'
