with Phil Cardew and his Band
As soon as Phil Cardew could hold and play a fiddle his father put him in the Cardew family quartet. His first professional engagement of importance was with Jack Hylton 's ' Piccadilly Revels ' at the Piccadilly Hotel. He also played the saxophone in Fred Elizalde 's orchestra at the Savoy. When Jack Payne started his long run with the BBC he made Phil Cardew his arranger-in-chief, a job he did also for Henry Hall. Phil leapt into radio fame with ' Band Waggon ' and personally conducted the Band Waggoners at every performance.
