This is the first day of a memorable auction of jewellery, furniture, china, pictures, and books, all given by people of every rank all over the country in aid of the Red Cross. Among the items are a silver gilt tea service, used every day at Buckingham Palace by the Queen ; silver cup and cover (1764) given by the King ; a pair of two-handled Irish cups (eighteenth century) given by the Duke of Gloucester; and a French dessert service (porcelain, Paris, (eighteenth century) given by the Duke of Kent.
Michael Standing will set the scene, and among lots that will be bid for today is a diamond collet necklace, composed of thirty-one large graduated stones, presented anonymously, that is likely to fetch a very big figure.
