Records of signature tunes of well-known artists, presented by Charles Maxwell
Within the last few years the signature tune has become a thoroughly established feature of radio, film, and stage. The organist, the artist, the dance band - most of them have their signature tunes. You rarely hear more than a few bars of them, however, and in this programme, and others that may follow it, Charles Maxwell will play you some famous signature tunes in the whole, and will give you the chance to guess whose some of them are.

Variety from a Northern theatre including Tommy Trinder
It is always good fun listening to Tommy Trinder, most precocious of comedians, who hands out laughs - and photographs. He specialises in singling out someone in the audience and being thoroughly rude to him. The victim, who enjoys it as much as anyone, seldom scores over this genius of repartee.
Tommy began by entertaining at working men's clubs for 7s. 6d. a night; at nineteen he earned £l5 a week as principal comedian in revue; at twenty-one he worked a single act throughout South Africa. Then for five years he did concert-party work round our seaside towns.
Jack Hylton discovered him, and booked him for a tour of a Palladium show. Tommy never looked back.
