An exhilarating performance of a new production of The Valkyrie from the Royal Opera House. The second work of Wagner's epic Ring cycle, it follows on from yesterday's broadcast of The Rhinegold.

The conflicts between power and love come to the fore as Wotan faces the consequences of his actions in The Rhinegold. Bryn Terfel plays the lead role of the chief god who has retrieved a magical golden ring from the greedy Alberich, while Lisa Gasteen is his heroic Valkyrie daughter Brunnhilde, the voice of his conscience.

Introduced by Michael Portillo. Parts three and four are scheduled to be shown next year.

5/10. Uzbekistan to Syria. The rarely visited trading domes of Uzbekistan and Fire Temple of Azerbaijan get an incisive Dan Cruickshank appraisal, before he moves on to scale a cliff face towards arguably the biggest archaeological puzzles of the 19th century: the Bisitun carvings. The historian also takes in the remains of the great city of Persepolis in modern-day Iran, explores the exotic souk in Syrian capital Damascus, and then indulges himself with some pampering at a hammam - the local steam bath. The Swedish store's popularity and success is based around its chic, affordable design, yet for some Ikea can prove to be a confusion of strange names, long queues and self-inflicted DIY disasters. Have we all been seduced into the cult of the brand by its marketing magic? When the new flagship store opened recently in Edmonton, north London, how far were British consumers actually prepared to go to secure a bargain? Nicky Taylor finds out.

Mesmerising comedy starring Michael Douglas , Tobey Maguire and Frances McDormand. Middle-aged college professor Grady Tripp has an awful lot on his mind - his wife has just left him, his lover is pregnant, and he's struggling to complete his long-overdue second novel. But his messy life is further complicated by the arrival at a faculty party of James, a troubled but talented student who just happens to be carrying a gun. Review page 60.
