By piecing together the fate of five seemingly unrelated corpses, this film, presented by Dan Cruickshank and first shown last year as part of Victorian Week, examines how Victorian society confronted the issue of death.
The detective work carried out on surviving material from the 19th century uncovers bodysnatching, overflowing inner-city graveyards and lavish cemeteries. As part of his investigations, Cruickshank also explores the Victorian resistance to cremation, and assesses the changing attitudes to death following the Great War.
