The second of three programmes in which popular historian Lucinda Lambton tours America in search of the traditions and heritage that have survived into the 21st century.
This week's destinations include a working 18th-century nail factory in Massachusetts, the oldest country store in Kentucky, the Mohonk Mountain House on the Hudson River, a preserved 1840s department store in Memphis, and the garden district of New Orleans. Laita 's Odyssey. Nearly three years ago, Omar, an officer in Saddam Hussein 's army, fled Iraq with his wife Laita and their two sons after his refusal to execute deserters put his life in danger. Unable to find asylum in the west, the couple turned to smugglers for help. but only got as far as Istanbul before their money ran out. Leaving Omar in Istanbul. Laita and her children travel by boat, truck, train and on foot to try to reach her British brother in Italy. in this documentary, reporter Nancy Durham follows
Laita's hazardous and expensive journey through Europe and interviews the smugglers on the way.
