Around the world, mountains of radioactive waste from the nuclear industry are accumulating and as the toxic heaps grow bigger so does mankind's dilemma. This week's edition asks what can be done with the waste that is too dangerous to leave exposed, but politicallytoo hot to handle.
The solution of a "hell hole" has been devised to house all the world's radioactive rubbish.

Finally, the dominoes fall in the Cold War. The Soviet bloc is disintegrating, virtually without bloodshed. First Hungary, then Poland, the German Democratic Republic, Bulgaria, Czechoslovakia and Romania slip away, and Gorbachev makes no effort to hold them back by force.

The penultimate programme in this series examines how it all happened so quickly and why there wasn't more opposition from Communist hardliners.

In extraordinary scenes of jubilation, the Berlin Wall is torn down and the collapse of the empire forged by Stalin ushers in a new era for Europe. This creates optimism but also poses new questions for the US and international diplomacy.
