The fig tree, known as 'Amate' to the ancient Mayan Indians, is a giant of the tropical forest of Central America. Yet without a creature so small that it can stand on the head of a pin, it would not exist. The tree is completely dependent on the elaborate and intricate life-style of a tiny fig wasp; remarkably, the one cannot live without the other.
And that's not all. Through the seasons, by day and night, a strange community of plants and animals inhabits the tree, ranging from bromeliads growing on its branches to iguanas and howler monkeys which dine off its fruit and leaves, and pacas and jaguarandis that dwell in its roots.

A Portrait of Gwen John 1876-1939 by ELAINE MORGAN with 'I think I shall do something good soon -if I am left to myself and not absolutely destroyed.'
For many years almost the only thing generally known about Gwen John was that she was the sister of Augustus John. Yet Gwen John , like her pictures, intense, subdued yet passionate, is now regarded by many as the finer artist.
In the 1890s Gwen joined Augustus at the Slade School of Art but, thereafter, their paths diverged. Gwen moved to Paris, earning a living as an artists' model. She posed for the sculptor Rodin, becoming his mistress, a love affair which was to obsess her. After his death she continued to paint with a devotion and single-minded-ness matched by extreme reluctance to sell or exhibit.

The King's Singers tour this week goes to Regensburg in Bavaria, a beautifully preserved medieval town, and the surrounding Danube countryside. The Reichssaal, the home of Germany's first parliament, the 12th-century Wiirstkuche, one of Europe's oldest pubs, and Castle Prunn, a typical Bavarian hilltop castle, are among the settings for music by Hassler, Senfl, Forster and the ubiquitous Lassus.
