Barry Gill covers the South African Grand Prix.

New cars, drivers, teams, and nationalities were mixed as never before on the starting grid of the first Grand Prix of 1970 at the Kyalami Circuit in South Africa last Saturday. But the result rested on the performance of five engines. The Ford Cosworth V8, which powered Jackie Stewart to the World Championship in 1969, the BRM V12, and two new engines from Ferrari and Matra of France.
This is the story of the big race, the personalities driving in it and the Formula One engine which won the power game in this first Grand Prix of 1970.
