Rome, 1944: the nine-month Nazi occupation is nearing its end. A fanatical young blackshirt is sent to find, arrest, and bring in the potential future socialist president of Italy - an elderly philosopher. During an eventful journey back to the city the two men of opposing ideologies find they almost become friends.
