With the naked eye we can see a few of the stars in our own galaxy. The giant optical and radio telescopes have given us a picture of the universe consisting of an enormous number of galaxies separated by immense distances, and travelling at fantastic speeds.

The peaks of the Japanese Alps are covered in snow, but scalding geysers force their way through the earth's crust. Lower down the slopes grow many wild flowers familiar to us in Britain, and there are attractive animals, flying squirrels, bears and bear-cubs, and the pretty little yamane which is found only in Japan.
Esther Hoshino, the daughter of a Japanese naturalist, who helped to make the sound recordings in the programme, appears with Peter Scott.

Triumph in the West by Sir Arthur Bryant, which was published yesterday, has made available the second part of Lord Alanbrooke's Diary, which he wrote during the war in the form of a nightly letter to his wife. Tonight's programme surveys this new material which must have an important and permanent place in the historical records of the Second World War.
