Introduced by Peter Scott.

The peaks of the Japanese Alps are covered in snow, but scalding geysers force their way through the earth's crust. Lower down the slopes grow many wild flowers familiar to us in Britain, and there are attractive animals, flying squirrels, bears and bear-cubs, and the pretty little yamane which is found only in Japan.
Esther Hoshino, the daughter of a Japanese naturalist, who helped to make the sound recordings in the programme, appears with Peter Scott.

Field-Marshal Viscount Alanbrooke discusses his role as Chief of the Imperial General Staff in the Second World War with Norman Gibbs, Chichele Professor of the History of War in the University of Oxford and Lt.-General Sir Archibald Nye, Vice-Chief of the Imperial General Staff, 1941-1946.
Produced by Michael Bowen in the BBC's West of England studios

Triumph in the West by Sir Arthur Bryant, which was published yesterday, has made available the second part of Lord Alanbrooke's Diary, which he wrote during the war in the form of a nightly letter to his wife. Tonight's programme surveys this new material which must have an important and permanent place in the historical records of the Second World War.

(A sound recording can be heard in the Home Services (except Wales and Northern Ireland) on Friday at 8.30 p.m.)
