Donald Macleod is in the company of British composer Jonathan Harvey, a fastidious craftsman whose works are very much music of integration, often bringing together different worlds: cutting-edge electronics and traditional instruments, past and present, material and ethereal.

Harvey is singularly thoughtful about his own art and the process by which he makes it, but he is not a composer with his head in the clouds - he is very much hands-on when it comes to computer technology and electronics, and how they can be harnessed to open up new worlds of the imagination.

He is a composer whose work encompasses the realms of bliss as well as the practicalities and imperfections of the world of real instruments and earthly musicians. In an interview some time ago, he asked himself what the purpose of music is: 'It is, in my view, to reveal the nature of suffering and to heal - the one big question of existence.'

Including a hymn to Angels (an abiding interest of Harvey's, and he is often conscious of their presence in everyday life), and the now-classic electronic work Mortuos Plango, Vivos Voco, whose two main sonic components are the great tenor bell of Winchester Cathedral and the treble voice of Harvey's own son Dominic (who was a Winchester chorister in the late 1970s). Plus a pair of viola pieces that evoke the image of a remote Tibetan monastery; and Song Offerings, a magical song-cycle set to the words of Rabindranath Tagore, and one of the composer's most beautiful and accessible works.

From the 2009 Cheltenham Festival, Scott Ellaway conducts violinist Nicola Benedetti and Orchestra Europa in works by Mendelssohn, Tchaikovsky and Schubert.

From the 2009 Cheltenham Festival, a programme of music featuring the talented young professionals of today and of the future. Orchestra Europa is a fledgling orchestra, set up by its young conductor Scott Ellaway to bring together the best conservatoire graduates before they find permanent positions in established orchestras across Europe.

They perform Schubert's final Symphony, and music by Mendelssohn, a composer who was always interested in his musical forbears, and who conducted the first performance of Schubert's Ninth Symphony ten years after his death.

They are joined by Nicola Benedetti, who is soloist in one of the favourites of the violin repertoire, Tchaikovsky's Violin Concerto.

Matthew Sweet and critic Emilie Bickerton review Lars von Trier's latest film, Antichrist, starring Willem Dafoe and Charlotte Gainsbourg. It has stirred up controversy because of its explicit depiction of sex and sexual violence. 

Harvey Klehr, the co-author of Spies: The Rise and Fall of the KGB in America, believes his new book - which has sparked controversy in the USA - provides the most complete account yet of Soviet espionage in the states during the 1930s and 40s. It offers the last word on many leading figures of the time who were under suspicion including J Robert Oppenheimer and Ernest Hemingway. Author Don Guttenplan joins the discussion to question some of the findings.    

Screenwriter Peter Bowker discusses his latest television drama, Desperate Romantics, which chronicles the adventures of three men who created one of Britain's most important art movements: the self-styled 'Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood'.

Jez Nelson presents music celebrating the rich Paris jazz scene. Featuring esteemed bass player Henri Texier's Quartet, plus sets from young pianist Eve Risser and experimental trio Jean Louis recorded on the final night of a week-long series of Parisian-inspired concerts at Kings Place in London.

Henri Texier's Red Route Quartet play elements of classic love songs, which are improvised over freely, allowing Texier's North African connections to seep through. The band consists of his son Sebastien on sax and clarinet, drummer Christophe Marguet and guitarist Manu Codjia.

Representing the next generation of Parisian jazz, Eve Risser performs a solo set on prepared piano, followed by electronic wizardry and brilliantly energetic original compositions from the trio Jean Louis.
