Lucy Duran presents performances from the 2008 Festival on the Niger in Segou, central Mali. With Abdoullaye Diabate and Yoro Diallo as well as the hunters' music of the region.

Ten thousand people from all parts of Mali, from neighbouring West African countries, and from Europe, Asia and the Americas, gathered in Segou in central Mali earlier this year for the annual Festival on the Niger.  Lucy Duran introduces performances by Abdoullaye Diabate and Yoro Diallo, who are both hugely popular in Mali but little known outside, and she goes in search of the rarely-heard hunters music of the region.   

The Festival is literally on the Niger, as the performers play from a barge that floats on this great African river.   It was started three years ago to promote culture and tourism in that region, to try and tempt travellers on their way to Timbuktu to stop in Segou for a while.  The artist line-up is a mix of internationally known Malian artists such as Afel Bocoum from Niafunke, and artists who are popular in Mali but less well known outside.  

Abdoullaye Diabate is a singer who comes from Segou.   He sees himself as a modern-day griot, giving social and political messages to people while entertaining them with great songs for dancing.  Yoro Diallo comes from Wassulu in the west, and is a leading player of the hunters music of that region.

Claire Martin introduces celebrated alto-saxophonist Lee Konitz in concert at the 2008 Glasgow International Jazz Festival, performing alongside pianist Frank Frank Wunsch and bassist Henning Gailing in a programme featuring mainly jazz standards. 

With a career that has lasted more than 50 years, Konitz is known for going against the grain, determined to forge his own style of playing and not follow that of the great Charlie Parker. He gained early popularity playing with pianist Lennie Tristano and later as a member of Miles Davis's famous Birth of the Cool nonet. After virtually giving up performing in the 1960s, Konitz re-emerged with a burst of recording and concert activity in the 1970s. He has remained a sought-after headliner and sideman.

Konitz played with pianist Lennie Tristano and later with Miles Davis 's Birth of the Cool nonet. Charles Mackerras conducts the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment and an international cast in Handel's oratorio Belshazzar. With a libretto by Charles Jennens (who wrote the text for Saul and Messiah), the work is based on the Old Testament story of the downfall of the Babylonian king.
