Donald Macleod explores Rossini's forgotten operatic masterpieces, including Il Signor Bruschino.

Rossini’s operatic career got underway in 1810 with La cambiale di matrimonio – the first, melodious gust of a musical whirlwind that was to blow unabated for 20 years, then die down as abruptly as it had sprung up. When he retired from operatic composition at the age of 37, he had more than three dozen operas to his credit, yet relatively few of them have kept a place in the repertoire. This week, Donald Macleod turns his attention to Rossini’s forgotten operatic masterpieces, starting, today, with his one-act farsa, Il signor Bruschino. But first – and for the only time this week – a word from a rather more familiar character …

British composer George Benjamin conducts the BBC Symphony Orchestra in his first orchestral work Ringed by the Flat Horizon, which was dedicated to his teacher Olivier Messiaen. The concert opens with Messiaen's four meditations on religious themes, L'ascension, and returns to France at its close with popular works by Ravel. German violinist Carolin Widmann makes her Proms debut with Stravinsky's neo-Classical violin concerto. Introduced by Sara Mohr-Pietsch.

Notes:-
Monobloco brought the Rio Carnival to WOMAD - they are one of Brazil's most popular 'bloco', or street-bands, and they perform every year in the Rio Carnival.  They have been hailed as a breath of feresh air on the carnival scene, as they play not only samba rhythms, but a wide variety of other traditional beats too.  Even their rehearsals attract thousands of spectators in Rio.  They performed in the Siam Tent on the Saturday afternoon of the Festival.
Terakaft are a desert blues band from Mali, started by two founder-members of fellow Touareg band Tinariwen.  Their name means 'Caravan' in Tamashek, and they played their first concert  in 2001.  They were also in the Siam Tent, closing the Friday night-Saturday morning session at 1.45am.
