Rossini moved to Naples and met the prima donna who became Mrs Rossini, Isabella Colbran.

Donald Macleod explores Rossini's experiences in Naples and Vienna and the programme includes excerpts from his tragic masterpiece Ermione.

When Rossini moved to Naples, the then capital of the operatic world, he met the prima donna who was to become Mrs Rossini, Isabella Colbran. He also met Beethoven in Vienna, who advised him to stick to comedy. Happily for posterity, this was advice he ignored. The programme includes excerpts from his tragic masterpiece Ermione, which Rossini liked to call his 'little William Tell'.

Ian Skelly presents the Ulster Orchestra under its principal conductor Kenneth Montgomery exploring contrasting nationalities in a colourful Proms programme of Irish and Czech music. Works by Irish born composers Ferguson and Stanford are followed by Smetana's Ma vlast and Dvorak's Eighth Symphony. Young Irish pianist Finghin Collins makes his Proms debut in Stanford's Second Piano Concerto. Introduced by Alex Wilson.

Rachmaninov's Vespers, his heartfelt setting of the Orthodox All-Night Vigil, is performed by the Estonian Philharmonic Chamber Choir and its outgoing chief conductor and artistic director Paul Hillier. Written shortly before the composer emigrated, the piece is based on chants of the Russian Orthodox Church, evoking the rich, expressive choral sound of his native land.
