The Tango started life as music of the slums and took on the form of an earthy and sensual dance. The music exudes strong feelings of sensuality, passion and the romantic element of the tragic too. Its dervish and dramatic nature imbued the music with the sense of the ‘dance of death.’ 

Essentially the music of exiled people, the musical themes of Tangos often centre on broken love, the sadness for having left a country behind for a new life, as well as a desire and passion for life!

Cyrano de Bergerac is, perhaps, the greatest classic romance. Set in 17th century France, it features the eponymous poet-swordsman with a misshapen nose but abundant panache who falls hopelessly in love with the beautiful Roxane. She, alas, loves another, the dashing Gascon soldier Christian de Neuvillette and Cyrano finds himself acting as the young suitor's ghost writer, pouring out exquisite love poems to win the day. 
This production uses Anthony Burgess's fine verse translation of Rostand's ever-popular play. Cyrano is played by Kenneth Branagh, Roxane by Jodhi May and Christian by Tom Hiddleston. They make the most not only of the passion and poetry and the famously moving conclusion, but also the humour which threads through the play.

Nature writer Richard Mabey presents an exploration of the natural phenomena of spring and its connections with literature and art.  

Richard has kept nature diaries since he was a teenager and retraces some of his old haunts in the Chilterns where he used spend hours walking around by rivers and woods observing spring rites.

He’s also joined in Norfolk by bird expert Mark Cocker and together they will be chasing the "spring tide" in Breydon Water.  

One of the most respected and senior nature writers in the UK, Ronald Blythe shows Richard the delights of spring in Suffolk.  Ronald has been writing about the countryside for more than sixty years and he and Richard discuss how climactic change has affected the season.  

Jonathan Bate explores further with Richard the literary connections with spring.   

Cornish artist, Kurt Jackson is best known for his dramatic landscapes and his ecological artistic work.  He discusses with Richard how spring affects him and his work as an artist.
