Claudio Abbado makes a rare Proms appearance, bringing with him, his brainchild, the Lucerne Orchestra. Here they perform Mahler's Third Symphony, a work described by the composer as "Something the world has never heard before. In it Nature herself acquires a voice and tells secrets so profound that they are perhaps glimpsed only in dreams".

Heinrich von Kleist committed suicide in 1811 aged 34. Although he produced a body of work that would eventually earn him a place in German literature next to Goethe, Schiller, Heine and Mann, he received practically no recognition in his lifetime. Ivan Howlett explores the life and work of one of the most tortured yet brilliant writers of the early 19th century.
