Presented live from the Royal Albert Hall by Martin Handley.
The London Symphony Orchestra and its new principal conductor present an-all Russian programme: Tchaikovsky's two fantasy overtures reflect this year's Proms focus on Shakespeare; Prokofiev's Seventh Symphony was written under the watchful eyes of Stalin's censors: and his youthful Second Concerto is considered one of the most challenging in the repertoire.

Tchaikovsky Fantasy Overture: Romeo and Juliet

Prokofiev Piano Concerto No 2

8.30 Twenty Minutes: What Can Russia Teach Us?
The Archbishop of Canterbury, Dr Rowan Williams, a keen student of Russian literature and thought, is writing a book on Dostoyevsky. He talks about his interests to Lesley Chamberlain.

8.50 Tchaikovsky Fantasy Overture: Hamlet

Prokofiev Symphony No 7

Alexander Toradze (piano), London Symphony Orchestra, conductor Valery Gergiev
