5/5. Donald Macleod concludes his series of programmes featuring the music of Elizabeth Maconchy in the week that marks the centenary of her birth. Joined in conversation by composer Nicola LeFanu , Maconchy's daughter, Macleod explores the work of this brilliant composer who described her music as "an intellectual art, a balanced statement of ideas, an impassioned argument"; sentiments perhaps nowhere more forcibly articulated than in her cycle of 13 string quartets, the tenth of which is aired today.

Jez Nelson presents two performances featuring the great bassist Reggie Workman , best known for his work in the 1960s with the John Coltrane Quartet. For tonight's first set, Reggie joins Finnish tenor saxophonist and flautist Juhani Aaltonen - a veteran of 40 years on Finland's free-jazz scene and himself heavily influenced by Coltrane - for a trio set with Andrew Cyrille on drums. Workman's regular group, Trio 3 provide the second set. featuring the alto sax of Oliver Lake , a founding member of the World Saxophone Quartet.
