3/5. Nothing lasts for ever, not even for Mozart. As 1784 ended and 1785 began and his astonishingly successful year of subscription concerts faded into the memory, Mozart's career took what the Viennese public saw as a couple of faltering steps. Donald Macleod weighs up the evidence.

Simon Rattle Week - Idomeneo Mozart's dramatic opera is a speciality of Simon Rattle 's, performed here with an all-star cast that includes Czech soprano
Magdalena Kozena. She sings the pivotal role of Idamante, Prince of Crete, who is at the pinnacle of the opera's love triangle: he loves the captive Trojan Princess Ilia, and she loves him - but so does the fierce Greek Princess
Elettra. As if that's not bad enough, Idomeneo himself, the King of Crete, has vowed to sacrifice the first being he meets after being saved from drowning- and who should he see first but his own son, Idamante? Presented by Andrew McGregor.
