With the end of the Second World War, Medtner could pick up the threads of his life again, although he had recently discovered a heart condition which made his performing career look doubtful. However he went on to compose his Sonate-Ballade, which he was later to be given the opportunity to record by a wealthy benefactor. Donald Macleod introduces this and his last and most deeply felt work - his Piano Quintet.
