Gounod spentthe 1870s in England, much of it with Mrs Georgina Weldon and her husband. But while his personal life was complicated, he was energised by the English approach to choral music and wrote Morset Vita - "Death and Life" -for the Birmingham Festival. Donald Macleod concludes his series on Gounod by listening to some late works, including the A minor string quartet, which was not published until after the composer's death.
