4: Danish Legends. Niels Gade was at the height of his European fame when he completed Elverskud, a ballad on Danish legends for solo voices, choir and orchestra. It is one of the most Danish of his works, and in today's programme the composer and conductor Bo Holten joins Donald Macleod to talk about the Nordic influences found in Gade's music.

Another programme in a series looking at how our multi-cultural society is being reflected in music education throughout the country. Today the spotlight falls on specialist music schools and colleges in Manchester, Leeds and Salford. There is orchestral music from the Chethams Music School Symphony Orchestra; big band jazz from Leeds College of Music and brass music from Salford University, whose brass band musicianship course is celebrating its 25th anniversary. Also featured are two of the Sainsbury's youth ensembles of the year - the Berkshire Youth Choir and the Young Sinfonia from Newcastle-upon-Tyne. Presented by Lynne Walker.

Music from the Time of the Crusades
Medieval writers believed that the name Jerusalem meant "vision of peace" and devotion to this holy city found its keenest expression in the Crusades that took place in the 12th and 13th Centuries. In a programme that includes specially recorded music, Gothic Voices explore the rich repertoire of Medieval music from this time, including plainchant and polyphony from Europe and Hildegard of Bingen's setting of a Respond for the Feast of Martyrs, Vos Flores Rosarum.

Sean Rafferty 's guests include the young Finnish conductor Mikko Franck , who is conductingthe Philharmonia Orchestra at the Royal Festival Hall this weekend, and violin and piano duo Fiona McNaught and Daniel Tong , who perform live in the studio. Plus arts news and a look at recent CD releases.

A concert given last Friday in Belfast's Waterfront Hall by the Ulster Orchestra.
Dmitry Sitkovetsky marks his final season as the orchestra's principal conductor with a typically warm-hearted and colourful programme, beginning and ending with Russian music. Viola player Yuri Bashmet , renowned for his musicianship, virtuosity and beauty of tone, is the soloist in the concerto which Bartok left incomplete at his death.
