Greek myth meets Harlequinade in Richard Strauss 's sparkling comedy. A nouveau riche Viennese decrees thattwo shows should be given simultaneously for the entertainment of his guests, and so the grieving Ariadne, whom Theseus has abandoned on the Island of Naxos, is surprised by a troupe of comedians. They set about comforting Ariadne, explaining that all she needs is a new man, until the timely arrival of the god Bacchus sorts everything out. During the interval Rodney Milnes continues his series Opera Snaps - a sideways glance at each of this season's Met operas.
