In 1997 the American musicologist David Buch hit the headlines with the news that a fairy-tale opera produced in Vienna in 1790 - by the company which premiered The
Magic Flute a year later - included previously undiscovered music by Mozart. But what is just as surprising about Der Stein der Weisen - as can be heard in this broadcast of its British premiere in English from the Hampstead and Highgate Festival - is the high quality of the other numbers by Mozart's less famous collaborators Geri, Henneberg, Schack and Schikaneder.
