On the Road to Montserrat
Medieval pilgrims to Montserrat encountered a clash of two musical worlds during their vigils: sacred music in the church and coarse dances and songs in the square outside. John Eliot Gardiner's year-long millennium Bach cantata pilgrimage comes to the church of Long Melford in Suffolk. The aim of this musical odyssey is to perform the cantatas on the liturgically appropriate days for which they were composed, in the context of an imaginary journey throughout Europe, which Bach himself might have undertaken.
