Shostakovich's music was always quirky and often sardonic, and towards the end of his life these qualities took on a new bite. His fifteenth symphony jokes about music from the past but is in the end honest and direct. Mark Wigglesworth has conducted Shostakovich at the Proms with great success; this evening he is joined by a young violinist in Beethoven's towering concerto.
