The original 1869 version of Musorgsky's opera, one of the greatest of the Russian School in its power of musical characterisation.

The Polish-bom pianist died last May, at the age of 100. Stephen Plaistow looks back over a remarkable career that spanned more than 90 years and included a wonderful Indian summer.
