Prokofiev's one-act opera was written when he was 20 and left forgotten in Paris, only partly scored. Edward Downes completed the orchestration, and the opera was premiered on Radio 3 in 1978. The action is set in 15th-century Venice. Stenio goes to see his friend Genaro to tell him about a mysterious lover who will not reveal her identity. It emerges later that she is Genaro's wife, Maddalena, and disaster ensues....
