After his death in 1945, Webern was hailed as the 'father of the new', his pure, precise works serving as the model for composers wishing to break with tradition.
But Webern believed he was continuing a tradition, not breaking with the past.
To launch this Webern Weekend, Michael Hall examines some of the processes at work in Webern's Variations, Op 27 for piano; and provides a trail of clues for effective listening to this least rhetorical, most concise of composers.
