A two-day series of Webern's complete acknowledged works - Op 1 to Op 31 - in eight programmes, with related talks and features.
Listening to
Anton Webern
After his death in 1945, Webern was hailed as the 'father of the new', his pure, precise works serving as the model for composers wishing to break with tradition.
But Webern believed he was continuing a tradition, not breaking with the past.
To launch this Webern Weekend, Michael Hall examines some of the processes at work in Webern's Variations, Op 27 for piano; and provides a trail of clues for effective listening to this least rhetorical, most concise of composers.
Musical examples and a complete performance of the Variations played by John McCabe.

Music by the Renaissance composer Heinrich Isaac , including the Propers for the Conception of the Virgin, from his works written for Constance Cathedral. Part of this cycle of works was edited by Webern in connection with his doctoral thesis, and Isaac's approach to musical structure proved influential, even after four centuries. Record
