Ever since its publication in 1927, musicians have pondered on a possible deeper significance to Berg's quotations from Tristan und Isolde and Zemlinsky's Lyric
Symphony. A decade ago, these were shown to be only surface facets of the work's deeper secret meaning, a paean of a love which, Tristan-like, Berg felt could only be fulfilled in death. The finale even has a text underlaying the principle thematic lines. This
Performance realises Berg's secret intention.
