A miniature for radio by JOHN THORNLEY with music by Webem, Mahler, Beethoven, Heinrich Isaac , Jule Styne and others
On 15 September 1945, at 9.45 pm, an American Army cook shot dead the 61-year-old Austrian composer as he stood smoking a cigar outside his son-in-law's house in the village of Mittersill. Scenes reconstructing the events leading to his death, and based on official depositions made during the Army Inquiry, alternate with biographical episodes exploring Webem's pantheistic love of the natural world, using words from the composer's letters, diaries and Poems. The three episodes are: the Webern family estate in Carinthia, 1905; on an alpine peak, 1938; in the garden of the composer's house near Vienna, 1944.
