The Duke of Argyll' never used the word in any serious work ' and T. H. Huxley thought that It defiled the page on which it was printed. The object of their attacks was the word ' scientist ', coined by William Whewell at the end of the 19th century. Dr David Williams of Loughborough University argues that Whewell's rigid definition of scientific activities has remained unchallenged.
