England to take part in the Spanish civil war. a seemingly inevitable step for the most politically engaged poet of his generation. Two years later, Auden settled in America, renouncing both his political life and his life in England. Auden came to see these apparently contradictory actions as the keynote of his personality and of his poetry.
We are, I know not how, double in ourselves so that what we believe we disbelieve, and cannot rid ourselves of what we condemn.
