2: The Idea of the Child Saint
In the second of two talks, Marina Warner traces the radical change in St Joan 's status from
Shakespeare's Henry VI through plays by Schiller and Southey, to recent works by DeMille and Claudel. In particular she examines the way Joan's character has been reshaped to meet a need for simple young heroines of unwavering purpose.
