In 1776 the Venetian, Ferdinando Bertoni , had to provide an opera for a company which included the famous castrato Guadagni, Gluck's original Orfeo. Another Orfeo resulted. Havdn actually chose Bertoni's setting in preference to Gluck's for performance at Esterhaz.
