In 1957, when he was 28, Noam Chomsky published Syntactic Structures. The book stimulated a profound change in linguistics. For the first time, insight into the structure of language could be used to draw conclusions about the workings of the mind -conclusions that are still controversial. Professor Chomksy, now of The Massachusetts Institute of Technology, discusses his work and its implications with John Maddox.
