In 1957, when he was 28, Noam Chomsky published Syntactic Structures. The book stimulated a profound change in linguistics. For the first time, insight into the structure of language could be used to draw conclusions about the workings of the mind -conclusions that are still controversial. Professor Chomksy, now of The Massachusetts Institute of Technology, discusses his work and its implications with John Maddox.

This year's operatic productions included Of Mice and Men by the American composer Car-lisle Floyd and Puccini's Edgar, both broadcast live last week on Radio 3.
