In the sixth of 15 weekly programmes. Christopher Hogwood talks about the arrival of trio-sonata form in 17th-century England, and in particular about the trio-sonatas of Purcell. in which the composer wrote he had ' faithfully endeavour'd a just imitation of the most fam'd Italian Masters '. Three sonatas from Purcell's 1697 set. together with other music by Purcell and a Sonata by William Young, are played by MEMBERS OF THE ACADEMY OF ANCIENT music.
