Jazz is essentially an art of performance in which the composer has to create a framework involving the improvising soloist. In this series of seven programmes Charles Fox examines how the role of the jazz composer has developed from the 1920s until the present day, and he shows how individual composers have tackled the problem. 6: Gil Evans
It was his collaboration with Miles Davis that first brought him critical acclaim. He then went on to compose for a variety of ensembles, paying particular attention to texture and sound. His more recent work has been for groups including rock musicians and electric instruments.
