The Ring from Bayreuth 1976
Das Rheingold , a music-drama in four scenes (sung in German) Bayreuth's centenary production of The Ring was a brilliant and original affair that outraged and offended many who saw it. An unknown young Frenchman, Patrice Chereau , was the producer of this harshly realistic, anti-romantic interpretation in which Rhine. maidens appear as call-girls and the gods as grasping frock-coated Victorian capitalists. Another Frenchman.
Pierre Boulez , conducted. Most acts ended in tumult as a battle between cheerers and booers broke out in the auditorium. In order to explain the production to radio listeners, each music-drama will be introduced by one of the several British music critics who were present. Harold Rosenthal , editor of Opera magazine, introduces a Rheingold in which the Rhine is not the seat of unsullied nature, but an industrial hydro-electric dam. Three Rhinemaidens:
