MAX REGER
1873-1916
Of all the German-speaking post-Wagnerians, Reger was the only one to attempt a fusion of complex chromaticism with the stylistic purity of Bach and Mozart. This worked best, not in the organ music by which he is usually remembered, but in his chamber music, so this week's programmes include five of his string quartets.
