Why Bother about Quarks?
Are quarks the fundamental constituents of protons and neutrons? Twelve years ago they were ' invented ' to explain a plethora of sub-atomic particles. But despite years of experimental effort, no one has seen a naked quark. So do quarks exist? If they do, are they themselves made up of other particles?
John Maddox discusses with Professors Burton Richter and David Cllne the hierarchy of particles and concepts in the sub-nuclear world.
