When Voltaire came to England in 1726 he was enchanted by all things English, except the coarse jokes in Shakespeare's plays. His impressions provide some interesting sidelights on the great quarrel in 18th-century taste between the ' noble manner ' of Burlington and Chesterfield, and the social satire of Swift, Hogarth, and The Beggar's Opera.
