The first of two talks by MICHAEL PODRO , Reader in Art, University of Essex.
German Expressionism and Futurism both had immensely ambitious programmes for the role of Art. Michael Podro considers the personal and technical difficulties that artists like Kandinsky in Germany and Balla and Severini in Italy had in living up to their own manifestos.
