A study of Pasternak's unfinished play by George Katkov
Narrated by Deny Hawthorne
Boris Pasternak, the great Russian poet, is perhaps best known in this country for his novel Dr Zhivago. At the time of his death in 1960 he was writing his first play. It was to be called The Blind Beauty and to provide a panoramic view of a Russian family up to the time of the emancipation of the serfs. Pasternak only completed part of the play and until two years ago nobody in the West had seen a copy of it. In tonight's programme extracts from it are linked by an explanatory commentary.
The extracts are translated by Max Hayward and Manya Harari
Those taking part: TARA PREM, SEAN ARNOLD, RICHARD BECKINSALE, WILFRID CARTER, GARARD GREEN, EDWARD KELSEY, ROLF LEFEBVRE, JOHN RYE, and MALCOLM TERRIS
